A Glimpse into Jewish Life and Tradition

Step into a journey through Jewish customs, rituals, and holy days in our permanent exhibit.

Our permanent exhibit on the Jewish way life uses objects donated by members of the Saint John Jewish Community to explain Jewish customs, rituals and holy days. Welcome babies with bris dresses, celebrate the Sabbath with candlesticks and challah, learn the rules of playing with dreidls during Hanukkah, ponder the meaning of Passover and remember those who have died. There is lots to learn and we welcome questions from our visitors.

From the Cradle to the Grave
Exhibit - Preparing for the Sabbath

The kitchen was the centre of the Jewish home. It provided warmth and food for families. The utensils from decades ago are a reminder of how hard the women worked to care for their homes. The accompanying video shows Mrs. Harry Davis and her longtime housekeeper, Lena Richard making bagels in the 1970s for the extended family. The 18-minute film was made by her grandson, Richard Davis, and shows the steps from mixing the ingredients, to shaping the dough, to boling and baking. The Davis grandchildren reported these were the best bagels in the world.
